For those of us who don't want the hassle of using preservatives and recipes that involve water/oil mixtures, there is a simple way to make balms and salves. These involve few ingredients and are simple and fast to put together. the shelf life is shorter, so make your batches smaller and in quantities you'll use in a month or so. You can also use carrier oils that are high in anti-oxidants that will extend the shelf life some.
Key ingredients in homemade natural skin balms and lotions
- First ingredient: Beeswax. Beeswax is one of natures most wonderful ingredients to use, and does a sterling job as a thickening agent, emulsifier and humectant. It has wonderful emollient, soothing and skin softening properties which helps the skin retain moisture.
- Second ingredient: Carrier Oil. Carrier oils have many therapeutic qualities. Read about skin care carrier oil profiles to choose the right oils for your skin care needs. Carrier oils can be mixed for added health benefits.
- Beeswax helps emulsify and thicken skin care. By playing with the wax/oil/butter combination amount, you can make your lotions and salves have a thicker or thinner consistency.
- Beeswax should only be melted in an approved electric wax melter, crock pot, microwave oven, or double boiler. Do Not melt Beeswax in a pan on a stove under direct heat. Beeswax is flammable and will start a fire if the wax comes in direct contact with a flame.
- Always keep water away from your jars! Even dipping a wet finger into a jar of your fresh lotion can contaminate it. Always make sure fingers are clean and dry or use an application to remove your lotion
- Fourth ingredient: Essential oils (optional). These are used for therapeutic abilities. Choose carrot seed Eo for anti-aging lotion. Or lavender EO for a calming cream. You can read up on essential oil profiles here.
- Third ingredient (optional): You can also add butters such as shea, cocoa etc to your balms and lotions.
