What are Carrier oils. How to use Carrier oils when making your own homemade natural skin care facial cleansers, creams, eye serums and more.
Carrier oil, also known as base oil or vegetable oil, is used to dilute essential oils and absolutes before they are applied to the skin. They are so named because they carry the essential oil onto the skin. Carrier oils do not contain a concentrated aroma, unlike essential oils, nor do they evaporate like them.
Simple recipes for the skin can include just carrier oils and essential oils. With just these 2 ingredients you can make facial cleansers, eye serums, face serums, oil moisturizers and face mask treatments. Read more about using essential oils in skin care
Using Carriers oils in your homemade skin care recipes.
We use Carrier oils to make homemade natural skin care cleansers, creams, lotions, serums etc because of the following:
- Carrier oils are just that. They carry the essential oils and nutrients into the skin. You can't use essential oils directly on the skin,. therefor you need an oil to dilute these.
- Carrier oils have beneficial therapeutic properties themselves. Some have an astringent effect, great for toning the skin and closing pores. Some have a very moisturizing effect. Carrier oils are loaded with vitamins, fatty acids and lots of other beneficial nutrients.
- Loaded with nutrients, these oils make a great skin care base for all products. Think of a carrier oil as the base, main ingredient in your skin care product.
Mixing carrier oils into your skin care formulas and recipes:
So first you'll want to create you skin care base. The great thing about carrier oils is you can mix them. Each carrier oil has it's own holistic healing properties. Think about what you want in a facial product. Do you need moisture but have acne? Then hazelnut oil and apricot kernel oil mixture might work for you. Are you concerned about wrinkles and oil skin. Then mixing 10% Carrot seed oil, 10% rosehip seed oil and 80% grapeseed oil will work for you. The mixtures are limitless! A little bit of knowledge about the oils and you're good to go. Read up on Carrier Oil Profiles
The great thing about making homemade skin care recipes is that all you really need is carrier oils and essential oils. You only add the oils that are beneficial to your skin care needs. It's as simple as making a base oil with carrier oils then adding essential oils for added benefits.
Carrier oil(s) + essential oils = skin care product
Key reminders when using carrier oils:
Carrier oils will make up most of your product. Here is the average ratio for skin care:
- Normal dilution is 2.5%, or 15 drops essential oil to one ounce ( 2 tablespoons) of carrier oil. For spot treatments, intensive skin treatments
- Low Dilution by 1%-1.5% or 6-9 drops per 1 tablespoon oil Everyday usages like facial cleansers, serums moisturizers, most skin care blends should stick to this ration:
- Extremely low Dilution by 0.5% or 3 drops in 1 tablespoon of carrier oil Sensitive skins, eye treatments
The above is a general guideline. Some EOs must be used in lesser amounts. Some you can use in generous amount. But no more then 15 drops per 2 tablespoons in a guideline that is widely used. Always read the bottle for suggested use.
Yes, you can mix carrier oils to make your base. However, certain oils should be used in lesser amounts and some can be used to full strength like jojoba oil. See our carrier profile page to see usage amount recommendations.
Carrier oils can go rancid. If the oil smells bitter or quite strong, than chances are its bad.
